Batten Bay Beach, Devon

Rock, shingle and coarse sand beach near Mount Batten and Mount Batten Breakwater. Water taxis run from the Barbican near the Mayflower Steps to Mount Batten.

Jennycliff Bay Beach, Devon

An area of rock, shingle and coarse sand at Jennycliff. Walk in from Mount Batten or use the large car park in the public park area above the beach.

Bovisand Beach, Devon

Sand beach roughly three kilometres south of central Plymouth as the crow flies. There's parking above the beach. Great views across Plymouth Sound to Rame Head and Cornwall.

Cawsand Beach, Cornwall

In high season, take the ferry from Plymouth to Cawsand in Cornwall. Gorgeous sand and shingle beach with top views. Just north of Cawsand is Kingsand Beach.

Whitsand Bay

Whitsand Bay is lined with some of best beaches in Cornwall. A massive sweep of sand, we'd recommend starting at Freathy Beach. Take the car ferry from Plymouth to Torpoint.

Cremyll Beach, Cornwall

Cremyll is a small beach across the water from Plymouth's Devil's Point. Cremyll is one of a number of beaches fringing Mount Edgcumbe Country Park. A passenger ferry runs between Cremyll and Plymouth, photographs provided.

Wembury Beach, Devon

Rock, shingle and coarse sand beach south of Plymouth. There's parking and a cafe. Walk the South West Coast Path west to Wembury Point and then Bovisand Beach.

Bigbury-on-Sea Beach

About three-quarters of an hour drive east of Plymouth, Bigbury-on-Sea Beach is a large sand beach that's very popular in high season. At low tide, walk to Burgh Island.

Bantham Beach

Big, beautiful South Devon beach with views across to Bigbury-on-Sea Beach and Burgh Island.

Thurlestone Sands/South Milton Sands (Beach), Devon

Gorgeous sand beach east of Bantham Beach and Dunes.
