Dartmoor's finest landscape?
In the east of Dartmoor National Park and close to Lustleigh Cleave, Manaton is, arguably, in the centre of the most beautiful area within the National Park.

A short walk to the south west is Hayne Down on which you'll find Bowerman's Nose. It's said that the huntsman Bowerman was turned into stone by witches as were his hounds which now form the nearby Hound Tor (East Dartmoor).

Becky Falls and a Giant Chair
Just down the road is the famous Dartmoor attraction Becky Falls Woodland Park and a few miles away, in the shadow of Hamel Down, is the site of the Dartmoor Giant Chair that's now been taken down.

Manaton was once home to the Nobel Laureate John Galsworthy. 'In 1895 Galsworthy began an affair with Ada Nemesis Pearson Cooper (18641956), the wife of Major Arthur Galsworthy, one of his cousins. After her divorce ten years later, the pair married on the 23rd September, 1905, and stayed together until his death in 1933. Prior to their marriage they stayed clandestinely in a farmhouse called Wingstone in the village of Manaton on Dartmoor, Devon' (source: Wikipedia, website link provided).

Exploring other areas
The The English Riviera is to the east and the South Devon AONB to the south east. Exeter's about thirty minutes away on the A38 and Plymouth about the same in the other direction.
