Magnificent gorge
Small, attraction-packed village on the western fringe of
Dartmoor National Park.
We recommend visiting for the National Trust’s
Lydford Gorge and Waterfall alone. There’s a wonderful circular walk that follows the heavily wooded flank of the gorge before descending to the River Lyd and the bottom of the highest natural waterfall in
South West England (see
Canonteign Falls for a higher, in parts man-made, waterfall).
Lydford Castle
The village is also home to the 'notorious medieval prison'
Lydford Castle. Once described as 'one of the most hanious, contagious and detestable places in the realm', the castle is next to
Lydford St Petroc's Church.
Okehampton Castle and the
Museum of Dartmoor Life are in
Okehampton to the north east.
Pubs, walking and cycling
Stop off at the pub if you're on the
West Devon Way or
Granite Way.
Dartmoor's high moors are to the east. Check out our 'Top 10 Tors' for recommendations.
Tamar Valley
Last, take some time to explore the
Tamar Valley AONB. It's exceptionally beautiful and is home to some cracking attractions.
