Moors and coast
Ilsington is a village in the east of
Dartmoor National Park. Built around an impressive
church, there's a local pub called The Carpenters Arms and a top hotel just down the road. It's a superb area in which to base yourself as there's quick access from the A38 and it's near the high moors from which there are views down to the
Devon coast.
Close to
Haytor Rocks and
Hound Tor (East Dartmoor), Ilsington is just east of the famous moorland village
Widecombe in the Moor.
Lustleigh Cleave is to the north, the stunning
Dart Gorge to the south west. The
Dartmoor Way runs through the village and the
Templer Way begins, or ends, on
Haytor Down.
Up on the moors, we'd recommend seeing
The Ten Commandments Stones on
Buckland Beacon and exploring the landscape on horseback from one of the area's many
stables. In Spring, walk through the bluebells on
Holwell Lawn. In Autumn, walk the area's many wooded valleys and cleaves.
Hound Tor Medieval Settlement is fascinating, seeing
Bowerman's Nose is great fun.
Beaches
Given that Ilsington is close to the eastern border of
Dartmoor National Park, there's also fast access to the
Devon coast. Many of
Devon's finest beaches are within reasonable driving distance. Browse our
Top 10 Beaches in South Devon list for ideas.
To the south east,
The English Riviera has some wonderful attractions and beaches. If you're on holiday in the Ilsington area for any period of time, we'd suggest exploring the
East Devon AONB as well.
If you want to visit a city, try
Exeter to the north east and
Plymouth to the south west.
