Start Bay
Much of the South Devon coast from Stoke Fleming (near Dartmouth) down to Start Point consists of shingle beaches. Hallsands is to the south of this massive arc of beaches. To the south east, you see Start Point and Start Point Lighthouse. To the north east is the sweep of Start Bay. It's an awesome sight.

Whilst there's parking behind the beach, we'd recommend walking the South West Coast Path to this area starting at Torcross and passing through Beesands. There's plenty of parking at Torcross which is at the southern end of Slapton Sands and Slapton Ley National Nature Reserve.

From Hallsands, we'd also suggest walking the South West Coast Path to Start Point. There are more, small beaches beyond Start Point as the coast switches west towards Prawle Point and then The Salcombe Kingsbridge Estuary.

The local area
Hallsands is part of the South Devon AONB which, in turn, is one of the UK's most popular coastal holiday and long weekend destinations. Major towns to visit include Dartmouth, Salcombe and Kingsbridge. For villages, we'd suggest Thurlestone, Bigbury-on-Sea and Newton Ferrers.

If you have kids, spend a day at Woodlands Park. The giant water slides, in particular, are great fun. Try also Pennywell Farm and Plymouth's Plymouth National Marine Aquarium.

Plymouth is a superb city with an internationally important maritime history. The Pilgrim Fathers sailed from here, Charles Darwin once walked its streets.

North west of Hallsands, we'd suggest a visit to Totnes. Its castle offers magnificent views, its buildings are impressive.

Day trips
Having spent time exploring the coast and South Devon AONB, head for Dartmoor National Park. East Dartmoor, from Ashburton to Bovey Tracey, is beautiful. Walk the Dart Gorge and Lustleigh Cleave.

To the north of Hallsands, take a day trip to The English Riviera. Visit Kents Cavern and Torquay Marina, Paignton Zoo and The Golden Hinde (Devon). Beyond The English Riviera, spend a day in Exeter.

West of Hallsands, head to the Tamar Valley AONB and Whitsand Bay which is part of the Cornwall AONB.
