Exeter, Devon, Visitor Guide

Worth visiting for its cathedral alone, Exeter's historic quaysides, merchants houses and post-war buildings reflect a fascinating and violent history.

Exeter Cathedral has the longest uninterrupted vaulted ceiling in the world and if you're into this sort of attraction (we are) then this will make you very happy. The cathedral close is great, too, and look out for the famous statue of Richard Hooker.

Around St Catherine's Almshouses, you'll find a vibrant city centre with a recently developed and very attractive shopping centre that uses Exeter's historic buildings as a great backdrop.

It's worth walking down to Exeter Historic Quayside. There's a Custom House, tourist information centre, places to eat and drink and some great shops.

Find The House That Moved, there's a great story attached to it!

Exeter's a good gateway into the rest of Devon. Dartmoor National Park is close, (the Devon bit) of Exmoor National Park a little further to the north west. The A38 and A380 take you down into the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and South Hams. Sidmouth and Budleigh Salterton are to the east. Doesn't take too long to drive into north Cornwall, too.
