A view
Across
The Salcombe Kingsbridge Estuary from
Salcombe, the village of East Portlemouth offers a classic view of one of the
South West's most beautiful towns. On a sunny day, when the colours of the sea, sand and vegetation are vibrant, this is a very special place in which to be.
Beaches
Start with its beaches. Strung out along this section of the estuary are some remarkable, if small, beaches. Whilst there's limited parking in East Portlemouth and, specifically, behind the National Trust's
Mill Bay Beach, if you're not staying in the village itself, we'd recommend taking the small ferry boat from Salcombe across to
East Portlemouth Beaches (Small's and Fisherman's Coves). Walk south from here to
Mill Bay Beach or
Sunny Cove. Across the water, you'll see
North Sands and
South Sands which are both easily accessible from Salcombe by the
South Sands Sea Tractor/Taxi.
Walking and boat trips
On the
South West Coast Path, East Portlemouth is in an area that's great for walking. Head east to
Prawle Point and
Start Point. There are some cracking beaches close to Start Point. Try
Bee Sands and
Hall Sands.
From East Portlemouth, we'd also recommend crossing the water and walking to
Overbeck's Garden and Museum and then beyond
Bolt Head to
Soar Mill Cove and
Bolberry Down. Alternatively, book a trip on a boat. Go north to
Kingsbridge or out to sea.
Surrounding area
The East Portlemouth/Salcombe area is a highlight of
South Devon so it's easy to spend all your time here. However, if you want to explore, we'd recommend trips to
Torcross and
Dartmouth,
Totnes and
Burgh Island. Note that
Dartmoor National Park is in easy reach from here.
