Seaside town and holiday resort
One of a number of popular resort towns on the stretch of
Devon coastline that runs from the
Exe Estuary through the
The English Riviera to the
Dartmouth area. Located behind beaches and between sections of red cliff coastline, Dawlish is divided by Dawlish Water, a pretty waterway that's home to the town's famous black swans.
With its lawns and bowling green, shops and museum, we'd recommend exploring the area around Dawlish Water. However, the main attraction is its coastline. Head north east on the
South West Coast Path and you get to
Red Rock Beach and the impressive red
Langstone Rock. Head south from Dawlish on the South West Coast Path and you arrive at Coryton's Cove. Both have superb views. To get to Dawlish Beach, you have to walk under the railway line that runs along the coast here.
A little further to the north east are
Dawlish Warren Beach and
Dawlish Warren National Nature Reserve. A little further to the south west are
Teignmouth Beach and
Teignmouth Pier.
The local area
Given the number of popular resort towns in the area, there are plenty of other places to visit and things to do if you're in Dawlish for any length of time. Try
Teignmouth and
Babbacombe,
Torquay and
Brixham. Across the
Exe Estuary, we'd suggest a day in
Exmouth and
Topsham.
For specific attractions, in addition to the area's beaches for which we provide a 'Top 10 Recommendations' list, we'd point you in the direction of
Powderham Castle and Estate and
Haldon Forest Park,
Kents Cavern and
Living Coasts.
Babbacombe Model Village is fun,
Paignton Zoo is ever popular.
Further away
South of the
The English Riviera is the
South Devon AONB. Visit
Dartmouth and
Salcombe. To the north east of Dawlish is the
East Devon AONB. In particular, we'd suggest you visit
Sidmouth and
Budleigh Salterton.
To the west, explore
Dartmoor National Park.
