One of the UK's most beautiful villages
A picturesque, privately owned North
Devon fishing village on
The Hartland Peninsula. Built into the side of the steep, wooded coastline, there are exceptional views and coastal walks.
Owing to its extreme natural beauty and popularity, the entire village has been turned into a tourist attraction with the intention of keeping 'it in the style of the mid C19th'. There's plenty of parking up top, visitors are funneled through a visitor centre/shop/restaurant where you have to pay to access Clovelly. Can get a bit frustrating but be patient, it's worth it.
Visitors descend a wide cobbled street with great views across
Barnstaple or Bideford Bay. Take a camera, everyone seems to have one.
The village itself is extraordinary, one of the finest we've visited in the UK. The cobbled street narrows and high on either side are idyllic houses. Unsurprisingly, there are many shops and places to eat and drink.
At the bottom of the village, there's a classic West Country fishing harbour from which the views back up the hillside are magnificent.
Things to do include Kingsley Museum and Clovelly Court Gardens, Fisherman's Cottage and donkey rides too!
We thoroughly recommend a visit but this is a seriously popular destination so be patient.
The local area
Clovelly's part of the
North Devon AONB and is north of the
Devon/
Cornwall border. The area has some of the UK's finest beaches. Try our 'Top 10 Recommendations' list below.
We'd strongly recommend spending some time walking the
South West Coast Path here. Try west to
Hartland Point.
Family attractions in the local area include
The Milky Way Adventure Park and
The BIG Sheep,
Dartington Crystal and, a little further away,
Exmoor Zoo. Visit
RHS Garden Rosemoor, too.
Day trips
If you're in the Clovelly area for a long holiday then we'd suggest you take a few day trips. Within
Devon, we'd recommend day trips to
Dartmoor National Park and
Exmoor National Park. Across the border, in
Cornwall, try
Bude. A little further south is the sublime
River Camel and Estuary.
