Gateway town to Dartmoor National Park
In the shadow of
Meldon Hill and a gateway town to the high moors of
Dartmoor National Park, Chagford's a short distance from the National Trust's
Castle Drogo and Gardens and the extraordinary
Teign Gorge. Owing to its status as an administrative centre of a tin mining region, Chagford is referred to as a 'Stannary Town'.
The town itself is well-heeled and slightly boho. Whilst we'd argue that it's pushing it to refer to Chagford, as some do, as 'Chelsea-in-the-Moor', there's undeniably a lot of wealth in the area. Note that one of
England's top hotels, Gidleigh Park, is just up the road.
There are lots of pubs and shops, a high quality restaurant and impressive buildings to enjoy but, in our opinion, Chagford's strength is its setting. Climb
Meldon Hill and you'll be treated to one of Dartmoor's best views. On the horizon, you'll see
Exmoor National Park. The only two mountains in the south of
England,
High Willhays and
Yes Tor, are to the west.
Alternatively, follow the
River Teign towards
Castle Drogo and Gardens and you'll find yourself in the
Teign Gorge. The gorge offers some of
Devon's best walking and we'd recommend joining either the
Dartmoor Way or
Two Moors Way here.
Local attractions
In addition to
Castle Drogo and Gardens and the
Teign Gorge, major local attractions include
The Miniature Pony Centre and
Becky Falls Woodland Park,
Canonteign Falls and the
High Moorland Visitor Centre. To the west of Chagford, visit
Okehampton Castle and the
Museum of Dartmoor Life. Beyond those, we'd recommend
Lydford Castle and
Lydford Gorge and Waterfall.
Again, we think Chagford's strength is its setting and the same applies for the wider local area. If you're heading to this part of the world, you must stride out onto the moors and experience Dartmoor's many sublime wooded valleys and cleaves.
Exploring further afield
Chagford's very close to the A30 which is the major road running down into
Cornwall. We regaularly head out to the North Cornwall coast from the Chagford area and the journey takes about an hour.
