Perhaps Devon's most famous view
Arrive at Bigbury-on-Sea by car, on foot or in a boat and you'll experience what is arguably
Devon's most famous view: Burgh Island Hotel on
Burgh Island.
Burgh Island
Connected to the mainland by a thin
strip of sand at low tide, a walk to Burgh Island's summit is a must. To your west,
Cornwall. To your east, Inner and
Outer Hope leading around to
Salcombe.
We'd then suggest having a drink at 'The Pilchard Inn' to watch the tide rise before taking one of
Devon's sea tractors back to the mainland.
For the more adventurous, and flush, book a meal at the hotel, dress in black tie or cocktail dress and spend an evening as if in the glamour of the 1930s.
Beaches
Most people head down to Bigbury-on-Sea for the area's beaches.
Bigbury-on-Sea Beach and
Challaborough Beach,
Ayrmer Cove and
Thurlestone Sands/South Milton Sands (Beach) are all wonderful.
Bantham Beach and Dunes is special.
Walking
Clearly, given its location, Bigbury-on-Sea offers super coastal walking. We particularly like the section of the
South West Coast Path that runs west to
Thurlestone. Lovely beaches, there, too.
Surrounding area
The village is a short distance south of
Dartmoor National Park, so if you're into the great outdoors then we'd suggest a trip to the moors.
Plymouth's to the west,
Dartmoor Zoological Park to the north west and
Salcombe to the east.
