Beautiful shingle beach coastline
Compact coastal village behind Bee Sands in the South Devon AONB. Torcross, Slapton Sands and Slapton Ley National Nature Reserve are to the north. Hall Sands, Start Point and its lighthouse are to the south.

Beesands' main attraction is its large shingle beach. There's plenty of parking, a good pub called The Cricket Inn and superb views of Start Bay. Walk the South West Coast Path north to Slapton Sands or south to Hall Sands. We've walked most of the South West Coast Path and this stretch of coastal walking is up there with the best.

The local area
Once you've spent some time on and around Bee Sands, Hall Sands and Slapton Sands, we'd suggest a trip to Dartmouth. On your way, pop into Blackpool Sands. You have to pay as it's a private beach with a cafe, shop and toilets but the views are fantastic. In Dartmouth, take Dartmouth Castle Ferry to English Heritage's Dartmouth Castle or the Dartmouth Boat Trips up the River Dart.

West of Beesands, explore The Salcombe Kingsbridge Estuary. Kingsbridge is to the north of the estuary, Salcombe to the south. Across the water from Salcombe is the delightful village of East Portlemouth. This lower section of the estuary is lined with stunning, small beaches. Try the National Trust's Mill Bay Beach and South Sands. Take the South Sands Sea Tractor/Taxi to/from Salcombe to the latter and whilst you are there, visit the National Trust's Overbeck's Garden and Museum.

West of Salcombe, the South West Coast Path between Thurlestone and Burgh Island is particularly impressive. Visit Thurlestone Sands/South Milton Sands (Beach), Bantham Beach and Dunes and Bigbury-on-Sea Beach. As you continue west to the superb maritime city of Plymouth, take time to explore Newton Ferrers. Plymouth itself, in our opinion, is a joy. Read our summary guide and recommendations here.

Inland, visit Totnes. For lunch or supper, we'd also suggest you pop into The Old Church House Inn in Torbryan.

Day trips
If you're spending a few weeks on holiday in the South Devon AONB then take a few day trips. Dartmoor National Park and Tamar Valley AONB are both magnificent. If you like cities, try Exeter. East of the city is the East Devon AONB and the beginning of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site.
