East Dartmoor
On the eastern border of Dartmoor National Park with super access to the Park, The English Riviera and the South Devon AONB.
Gorgeous town reminiscent of the more bohemian Totnes. Plenty of quality antique shops and places to eat and drink. There are a number of major Dartmoor attractions in the area including Buckfast Abbey and River Dart Adventures.
If you're heading to Dartmoor for a good walk and great scenery then we'd recommend heading from Ashburton to the area around Sharp Tor (Dartmeet) or due north to Haytor Rocks. A little further beyond that, Lustleigh Cleave is sublime.
Widecombe and South Devon, Riviera and cities
Ashburton is also a good base from which to explore this part of Devon. The famous moorland village Widecombe in the Moor is close and the popular South Devon AONB is just down the A38. To the east is The English Riviera and the fascinating and vibrant cities of Exeter and Plymouth are within half an hour's drive. If travelling down to the latter, we'd recommend popping across to the Tamar Valley AONB or one of the areas within the Cornwall AONB.
