Deeside Lochnagar NSA, Visitor & Tourism Guide

Royal Deeside and high mountains
To the centre and east of Scotland. Lies within the Cairngorms National Park and borders The Cairngorm Mountains NSA.

Home to Balmoral Castle and Estate, one of the British monarch's official residences (others include Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle).

A heavily wooded area above which rise high mountains. Drive the A93 from Perth through the NSA to Aberdeen if taking a road trip. Clearly, Autumn's particularly fine.

Deeside
‘Deeside’ refers to the area around the River Dee which rises on Braeriach (1296m) within the Cairngorm Mountains and flows east to Aberdeen passing Balmoral Castle and Estate on its way.

Lochnagar
‘Lochnagar’ refers to the mountains that rise above local towns and the Royal Palace of Balmoral. Lochnagar (1154m) and, to its south, Broad Cairn (998m) are part of a mountain plateau. This mountain plateau is to the south of Balmoral and, beyond them, Loch Muick.

Caledonian Pine Forest
Queen Victoria bought Balmoral in 1848 partly to protect the ancient and beautiful woodland which is a feature of Cairngorms National Park. The area is known for its heather.
