Dedham Vale AONB, Visitor & Tourism Guide
Suffolk and Essex border
Constable Country. In the
East of England, on the
Suffolk and
Essex border on either side of the
River Stour. The area between Colchester and Ipswich and an easy drive north east of
London.
The
Suffolk Coast and Heaths AONB is to the east and north east. Further up the coast, you'll find
The Broads National Park and
Norfolk Coast AONB.
Places in which to base yourself for a holiday
Major towns in the AONB include Sudbury and Maningtree. Try Flatford, Dedham and East Bergholt. If you ever saw the UK TV programme 'Lovejoy', it was shot at Long Melford, just north of Sudbury.
Villages and rivers, meadows and wildlife
Best described on its website: ‘The Dedham Vale and Stour Valley embraces one of our most cherished landscapes. Picturesque villages, rolling farmland, rivers, meadows, ancient woodlands and a wide variety of local wildlife combine to create what many describe as the traditional English lowland landscape.’
Constable Country
The painter John Constable grew up and worked here. His famous 1802 painting, ‘Dedham Vale’ is in London’s V&A (Victoria and Albert Museum). Head for the Flatford Visitor Information Centre and Bridge Cottage in Flatford (National Trust).
Gainsborough and boat trips, Nature Reserves and priories
Other attractions include the birthplace of Thomas Gainsborough and River Stour boat trips, Nature Reserves (for example Tiger Hill) and Clare Priory and Country Park.
