Weekend Breaks in Dartmoor National Park
It's easy to get to Dartmoor. At the southern end of the M5 by car or bus or just over a couple of hours from London to Exeter by train, the National Park is a fine place for a long weekend. Here are some of our recommendations for places to visit if you're looking for a short break on Dartmoor. If you're looking for specific hotels, walks, tors, valleys etc, try our other 'Top 10 Recommendation' lists. By James Penman.

Ilsington

For its location close to Haytor Rocks and some of the most beautiful wooded valleys or cleaves in the Park. Lustleigh Cleave is to the north and the Dart Gorge to the south west. Great walking and riding country.

Ashburton, Devon

Very attractive 'gateway town' on the eastern border of the Park. Recommended here for quick access to Dart Gorge and the high moors around Ryder's Hill.

Chagford

In the north of the Park and close to the Teign Gorge and Castle Drogo and Gardens. Stunning area, great for walking. Try the Two Moors Way from Chagford to Fingle Bridge. Eat and drink at the pub before returning.

Moretonhampstead, Devon

North east Dartmoor National Park. Follow the B3212 into the heart of the Park. We'd also recommend exploring Blackingstone Rock and walking the Dartmoor Way.

Tavistock

On the western fringe of the Park. Great access to the high moors from Great Mis Tor running north past Great Links Tor to Yes Tor and High Willhays. Discover the Tamar Valley AONB, too.

Drewsteignton

Pretty village close to the Teign Gorge and Castle Drogo and Gardens. Great spot for walking. Chagford is close by.

Two Bridges

In the Heart of Dartmoor National Park. You're pretty much in the centre of a wilderness. Walk to Wistman's Wood and visit the Princetown National Park Visitor Centre in nearby Princetown.

Lustleigh, Devon

Another pretty village by Lustleigh Cleave. Amazing views over East Dartmoor from Harton Chest and Hunter's Tor (Lustleigh Cleave).

Lydford, Devon

Over on the western border of Dartmoor. We'd recommend a weekend here for the National Trust's Lydford Gorge and Waterfall alone.

Plymouth, Devon

OK, it's not in the Park but it's very close by. The city has an exceptional and rich history. It's a good location from which to explore South Dartmoor, for example around Burrator Reservoir.
