Towns in Dartmoor National Park
Dartmoor's a high plateau in South West England surrounded, in the main, by 'gateway towns'. Depending on where you want to spend your time, our 'Top 10 Recommended Towns in Dartmoor National Park' list offers ideas as to where to base yourself for your holiday. Princetown is pretty much in the centre of the Park so, clearly, you can cover some ground if you stay there. We'd also recommend you browse our 'Top 10 Recommended Villages in Dartmoor National Park' list for additional inspiration. By James Penman.

Chagford

To the north of the Park and close to the National Trust's Castle Drogo and Gardens and the Teign Gorge. Pretty, slightly boho, gateway town to the high moors.

Okehampton, Devon

Close to the highest ground in Dartmoor, Okehampton's a great base from which to climb southern England's only two mountains Yes Tor and High Willhays. Visit Okehampton Castle and the Museum of Dartmoor Life.

Tavistock

On the western boundary of Dartmoor National Park. Good local walking, for example to Middle Staple Tor or Great Mis Tor, and ideal if you want to explore Dartmoor, Plymouth, the Tamar Valley AONB and the east of Cornwall.

Moretonhampstead, Devon

To the north east of Dartmoor. Gateway town to the heart of the Park via the B3212. Also take time to explore the reservoirs, tors and rocks to its east and south east. Chagford just up the road.

Ashburton, Devon

Arguably Dartmoor's most attractive town in a superb location for the Dart Gorge. Given that the town's just off the A38, Ashburton also offers good access to Plymouth and Exeter, the South Devon AONB and The English Riviera.

Bovey Tracey

On the east border of the Park. Dartmoor's most famous tors, Haytor Rocks and Hound Tor (East Dartmoor), are close. If you're on a family holiday, we'd also recommend a visit to Becky Falls Woodland Park and Canonteign Falls.

In the heart of Dartmoor National Park and, in our opinion, perfect for walking holidays. Burrator Reservoir to the south west and the high moors beginning to the north.

Buckfastleigh, Devon

On the south east border of the Park and close to Ashburton. So, great for the Dart Gorge and southern moors. Good access to Plymouth and Exeter, the South Devon AONB and The English Riviera.

Exeter, Devon

One of two cities on this list. To the north east of the Park. Visit for its fantastic Exeter Cathedral alone.

Plymouth, Devon

One of our favourite discoveries in the South West. With a rich historical background, the city has a stunning location. Visit the Plymouth National Marine Aquarium.
