Places To Visit in Dartmoor National Park
From impressive 'gateway towns' to pretty moorland villages, Dartmoor National Park has some cracking places to visit. Browse our 'Top 10 Recommended Places To Visit in Dartmoor National Park' to discover more. We'd also suggest you look at our other 'Top 10' lists for ideas on things to do, tors to climb and valleys to explore. Last, read our summary guides to Devon, the South Devon AONB, The English Riviera and the Tamar Valley AONB to discover the wider area. Cornwall is a short distance to the west and south west. By James Penman.

Chagford

Ancient 'stannary town' and a gateway to the high moors. The National Trust's Castle Drogo and Gardens and the exquisite Teign Gorge are nearby. Climb Meldon Hill for top Dartmoor views. Chagford's a bit of Devon, London and Narnia.

Ashburton, Devon

Beautiful, compact town on the edge of Dartmoor National Park. Lots of antiques shops and places to eat and drink. The sublime Dart Gorge is just up the road. Ashburton is similar to Totnes in the South Devon AONB, we think.

Widecombe in the Moor

Much visited village close to some of Dartmoor's most dramatic tors. Famous for its September fair which dates from the mid nineteenth century. In the local area, try also Buckland in the Moor and The Ten Commandments Stones.

Lydford, Devon

To the west of the National Park with a castle (that was a 'notorious medieval prison') and gorge. The gorge, owned by the National Trust, is a must. To the west and south west, explore the Tamar Valley AONB.

Tavistock

Borders Dartmoor National Park, hence its inclusion. Busy Devon market town with a great pannier market. Sir Francis Drake was born here in the mid sixteenth century. Visit Buckland Abbey in Tamar Valley AONB.

Okehampton, Devon

One of the best places from which to explore the high moors, Yes Tor and High Willhays being nearby. Also home to Okehampton Castle and the Museum of Dartmoor Life.

Moretonhampstead, Devon

Another of Dartmoor's 'gateway towns'. We like it most of all for its public art including 'Sparrowhawk' in the town centre. Castle Drogo and Gardens and other attractions in the vicinity.

Lustleigh, Devon

A perfect Dartmoor village centred around its church. Head up to the ridge of Lustleigh Cleave for great walking and awesome views of East and North Dartmoor. The area's heavily wooded so it comes alive in Autumn.

Visit Princetown for its Princetown National Park Visitor Centre, the Dartmoor Prison Museum and Visitor Centre and the exceptional local walking. Burrator Reservoir and Leather Tor are to the south west.

Postbridge, Devon

In the heart of the National Park and famous for its clapper bridge. Exceptional walking in every direction but we'd specifically recommend Bellever Tor and Bellever Forest. Panoramic views.
