Cranborne Chase and West Wiltshire Downs AONB, Visitor & Tourism Guide

South of Salisbury Plain and west of the New Forest National Park in southern England. West and south west of Salisbury, north west of Southampton. Cranborne Chase and West Wiltshire Downs straddle Wiltshire, Dorset and Hampshire. Major towns on its border are Wimborne Minster, Blandford Forum, Shaftesbury, Warminster and Wilton. Also on the border is the city of Salisbury.

The West Wiltshire Downs is rolling downland similar to that of the North Wessex Downs AONB. This is part of Thomas Hardy’s 'Wessex' country. The West Wiltshire Downs run roughly from Salisbury below the A36 to Warminster and also from Salisbury south west towards Blandford Forum. Cranborne Chase is a chalk plateau to the east of this downland and is named after the village of Cranborne. The Chase includes remnants of the ancient Cranborne Chase hunting forest and the former Royal Forests of Selwood and Gillingham. The Cranborne Chase and West Wiltshire Downs AONB also incorporates the Vale of Wardour.

Cranborne Chase is to the centre and south of the AONB. The West Wiltshire Downs are to the north and west of the AONB. The Vale of Wardour is to the west of the AONB.
