Massive sand beach popular with surfers
The main attraction here is Watergate Beach/Tregurrian Beach, one of Cornwall's, and North Devon's, massive Atlantic-facing beaches. To the north east of Newquay and to the south west of Padstow, Watergate, or Watergate Bay, is a compact coastal resort, with a well-known hotel, looking out across the sand to the sea.
Clearly, make the most of the beach and the various water sports offered, but we'd also highly recommend time spent on the South West Coast Path. To the north are Mawgan Porth and the National Trust's Bedruthan Steps. To the south, the Path takes you to Newquay.
Local attractions
In the local area, we'd suggest you visit Padstow on the River Camel and Estuary. The sandy beaches around Trevose Head are superb. Try Mother Ivey's Bay and Constantine Bay Beach.
Given that Cornwall's a skinny county, take a trip to The Eden Project. The National Trust's Lanhydrock House and Gardens is superb, too.
Day trips
If you're in the Watergate Bay area for any length of time, we'd recommend some day trips. To the south west, St. Ives is a must for any visitor to the UK. St Ives Bay is amazing. Further south, try Sennen Cove Beach and Land's End.
South east of Watergate Bay, head to Falmouth and St. Mawes. We'd also recommend Mevagissey and Charlestown.
* Others you should visit over the course of a lifetime include Perran Beach and the arc of sand forming St Ives Bay, Saunton Sands (Beach) and Putsborough Sand (Beach).
