Guarded by a squat, sixteenth century castle, St Mawes is a sensory delight. Intense colours, numerous restaurants/pubs/bars along the coastline, water, sand and rock shape an exceptional destination.
Located within one of the twelve geographic areas that make up the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Beauty, St Mawes is part of the Roseland Peninsula. St Mawes Castle offers fine views of St Anthony Head to the south east and Pendennis Point and castle to the south west. There's good walking along the 'Newton Cliff' National Trust coastline with Falmouth to the west. From St Mawes Castle, walk into the village which is strung out along the coastline ahead of you. Brilliant white buildings line a high harbour wall with dozens of boats beyond. The views across the water and back towards the castle and Pendennis Point beyond are superb. There are plenty of beaches, boat trips, places to eat and drink. It's a pleasure just to watch people go about their business and leisure. We loved the aptly named 'Idle Rocks Hotel'. In summer, you can take the short ferry trip to St. Anthony. From Falmouth, ferries also head north up the River Fal to Truro. [Information provided by picturetheuk] External Links None |
