Impressive Cornwall harbour
Porthleven, on the south coast of Cornwall, is an impressive Cornish fishing village. A series of massive harbour walls lead to a chunky stone pier that juts out into the sea offering top views down to the Mullion area. Shops and pub line the harbour so it’s a great place from which to people watch.

Great base for a holiday
Given its location pretty much in the centre of the south Cornwall coast, it’s a great base for a holiday. The Lizard Peninsula is to the east and south east, the Penwith Peninsula to the west.

On The Lizard, we’d recommend Gweek’s National Seal Sanctuary and the Helford River and Estuary, the National Trust’s Kynance Cove and Lizard Point. Try also The Lizard National Nature Reserve and Kennack Sands.

On the Penwith Peninsula, head for Land’s End and Sennen Cove, the National Trust’s Levant Steam Engine and Porthcurno’s Minack Theatre. St Ives is a must, the National Trust’s St Michael’s Mount a joy.

Coast and beaches
For coastal walking, head west or south east on the South West Coast Path. For beaches, Porthleven Sands is local. Try also Church Cove, Poldhu Cove and Polurrian Cove around Mullion and the National Trust’s Kynance Cove a little further on. To the west of Porthleven, we’d suggest Praa Sands and the vast beach around Marazion. To the north west, St Ives Bay is stunning. Over by Land’s End, we think Sennen is one of the finest beaches in the UK.

Major Destinations
Porthleven is close to Helston, which, in turn, offers great access to Penzance, Falmouth, St Ives, Redruth and Truro. This part of Cornwall is compact, so explore.
