Falmouth, Cornwall, Visitor Guide
A fascinating maritime town in south
Cornwall with the third largest natural harbour in the world.
Truro's a short drive to the north and the
Lizard Peninsula to the south. Falmouth looks out onto the
River Fal and Estuary and Falmouth Bay. Across the water is
St Mawes Castle and the exceptional
St. Mawes village.
Darwin returned from his famous trip on HMS Beagle to Falmouth in 1836, Dame Ellen MacArthur set off on hers more recently.
The town's packed with things to do and see. Walk, or drive, to
Pendennis Castle and Pendennis Point. There's the National Maritime Museum Cornwall, the harbour and beaches. There are art galleries and antique shops, restaurants and cafes. You can take boat trips across to
St. Mawes or up the Rivers Fal and Truro to
Cornwall's capital.
It's a great base from which to explore the south of
Cornwall.
Lizard Point is to the south, as is the exceptional
Kynance Cove which is managed by the National Trust.
St Michael's Mount makes an easy day drip as does
St. Ives. It takes slightly longer to get down to
Land's End but we'd head to the area for
Sennen Cove Beach alone.
