Chilterns AONB, Visitor & Tourism Guide

Stunning hilly countryside close to London
A seventy-five mile chalk escarpment with wooded hills and shallow valleys. Nestled in the valleys are some of the most beautiful villages in the UK much used in TV and Hollywood film.

Just to the west and north west of London. The Chiltern Hills or Chilterns run diagonally from Oxfordshire, through Buckinghamshire up into Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire. On the map, roughly Reading up to Luton.

Top attractions
The AONB is home to some top attractions from ZSL Whipsnade Zoo to Waddesdon Manor, Cliveden Estate to Hughenden Manor. If you're into rowing, visit the River and Rowing Museum in Henley-on-Thames, if you're into English Literature, John Milton's Cottage by Beaconsfield is a must. We also recommend Bekonscot Model Village.

Walks and villages
Having lived in the area for many years, we'd suggest that the AONB is fine walking country. Try the valleys and hills around Hambleden and Turville. A yomp along the banks of the Thames is great, too.

Red Kites
Last, look up. Red Kites were re-introduced into the area many years ago. They're a magnificent sight.
