Chichester Harbour AONB, Visitor & Tourism Guide

South west of Chichester and on the border of a National Park
To the south west of Chichester and east of Portsmouth. Within the county of West Sussex and pushing north to the fringes of the South Downs National Park.

Visualising Chichester Harbour
Imagine a tree with four branches. The trunk of the tree is the channel that runs from the harbour out into the sea around The Solent (Hayling Bay to the west and Bracklesham Bay to the east). The four branches are other channels that extend north to the A27 and South Downs National Park beyond.

Places to stay
Chichester is the obvious place to stay but try also one of the Witterings or book accommodation on Hayling or Thorney Islands.

Major attractions
Major attractions in and around the AONB include Fishbourne Palace (Indoor, Outside and Museum) and Chichester Cathedral and its walls.

Around the edge of the water channels are sand dunes, shingle beaches, extensive mud flats and salt marshes, reed beds and woodland.

Wildlife
Given this natural diversity, thereís plenty of wildlife from seals to crabs and heron to curlew. In the region of 50,000 birds live here, itís recognised as an internationally important place for birds and is an SSSI.

We thoroughly recommend the Chichester Harbour Education site, link provided.
