Bristol City, Bristol, Visitor & Tourism Guide

The largest, most populated city in the South West.

As is the case with most of the major cities within the UK, there's a wealth of things to do. Museums, galleries, restaurants, pubs, historical buildings, fine churches and its cathedral are all packed into a relatively small area within the centre of the city.

Perhaps start with its river. The Avon cuts through the city and it's from this natural feature that Bristol has generated much of its wealth. John Cabot sailed to America from here in 1497, trading thereafter brought goods and slaves, the Industrial Revolution saw a boom in tourism which, in turn, led to the development of steam liners such as the exquisite SS Great Britain. Today, the Harbourside has been regenerated into a leisure and arts area centred around Explore-At-Bristol.

From the Harbourside you'll see the towers of Bristol Cathedral and Cabot Tower beyond. Clifton leads to its world famous suspension bridge with awesome views of the Avon Gorge.

We'd recommend visiting St Mary Redcliffe, The Georgian House by Cabot Tower, the City Museum and Art Gallery, the Arnolfini, Bristol Zoo Gardens, Explore-At-Bristol, the British Empire and Commonwealth Museum and, above all else, the SS Great Britain.

We'd also recommend taking half a day just to walk around the city centre, taking in the elegant Regency buildings that survived the bombing during the Second World War. The views from Brandon Hill Park (in which you'll find Cabot Tower) across Bristol are a must. Look out for some fine art on the side of buildings, too.

And if you're into literature, pop into the Llandoger Trow pub. It's where Daniel Defoe is said to have met the man who inspired 'Robinson Crusoe'.
