Somerset. The fast moving A303, a major route into
South West England cuts through the Blackdown Hills.
Relatively unspoilt rural area used mainly for dairy farming. An elevated plateau dissected by narrow valleys. To the north of the AONB is a long north facing and wooded escarpment. A history of farming and small-scale industry, such as lime kilns, marl pits and mills.
Designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1991 and covering 360 square km. Highest point is Staple Hill at 1035 feet (315 metres) above sea level and close to
Wellington Monument. This is located to the far north east of the AONB.
