Woburn and Whipsnade, the Chilterns and Bunyan
In the East of England. Surrounded by the counties of Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Northamptonshire. London to the south

An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Chilterns runs up through Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire into Bedfordshire.

Towns and villages
Towns in which to base yourself include Bedford and Woburn. If looking for a village, try Whipsnade.

Pilgrim's Progress
One of England's greatest writers, John Bunyan, was born near Bedford. To learn more about his life visit the John Bunyan Museum. Shuttleworth Collection, Bedford Museum and Luton Museum & Art Gallery are essential if holidaying in the area, too. For history, try Woburn Abbey, Bedford Castle, Wrest Park and Houghton House.

Nature and the outdoors
The most obvious attractions in the county are Woburn Safari Park and ZSL Whipsnade Zoo. For fresh air, try Stockwood Park, Dunstable Downs (highest point in Bedfordshire) and the Icknield Way.

Last, if you're into trains and the railway, give the Leighton Buzzard Railway a go!
